Britain’s best-selling cars of 2022
[ad_1]
After the June registration results, the annual best-seller rankings are starting to settle at the top, with the Vauxhall Corsa extending its lead in the sales race.
With cost of living concerns hindering new car sales, the consumer new car market contracted by a substantial 22% in June compared to the same month last year, according to the latest data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
While the June registration charts consisted of many familiar best-sellers, including the Vauxhall Corsa which was 2021’s annual best-seller, June also saw the Tesla Model Y surge up the monthly best-sellers list with a 2nd place finish – an impressive result that means the upmarket SUV has entered the annual top ten for the first time this year.
Although the Ford Fiesta remains outside the top ten, June was another strong sales month for the compact Puma SUV, which took sixth place in the monthly sales rankings, just shy of British built models like the Nissan Qashqai and the Mini hatch.
Volkswagen also recorded a strong sales month – a strong performance from the Golf in June sees the hatchback retain ninth in the annual best-sellers list for the second month running. And finally, representing the budget end of the market, the MG HS SUV finished ninth in the June rankings, but it still remains outside the annual top ten.
Sales results for each car manufacturer (and even for each model range) have been heavily influenced by supply factors, as car companies battle component shortages – another hangover of the Covid situation from the last two years. Add the impending production stoppages that are now taking place as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the rest of 2022 is likely to remain difficult for car companies.

Britain’s best-selling cars of 2022 (as of May)
1. Vauxhall Corsa
The Vauxhall Corsa has continued to hold the top spot in the UK best-sellers list with June now in the rear-view mirror. The Corsa is continuing to sell in impressive numbers as 2022 progresses.
Despite its sales success, the Corsa has received distinctly average reviews from the motoring media, with an Expert Rating of just 64% on our Expert Rating Index – with the electric Corsa-e a point higher.
2. Ford Puma
Much like last year, the Ford Puma has recorded a strong start to 2022 – consistent sales figures for six consecutive months means that the Puma finds itself in second place after June. Ford will be hoping to avoid a repeat of 2021, when the Puma’s impressive start to the year was crippled by supply shortages.
The Puma has received plenty of praise from the UK motoring media, and currently holds an Expert Rating of 78% on our unique Expert Rating Index. That puts it top of the charts for supermini-based SUVs.
3. Nissan Qashqai
The Nissan Qashqai took the title of the UK’s best-selling new car in April, and has been the best-selling British-built car a few different months this year, but it loses out to the popular Mini hatch in June. Nissan’s flagship SUV holds on to third in year-to-date sales after finishing fourth in the June sales charts.
On sale since Autumn last year, the current-generation Nissan Qashqai holds an Expert Rating of 73%, which is reasonable for a medium SUV but nothing to really shout about.
4. Mini hatch
The twice-facelifted Mini hatch has been selling up a storm over the last few months, and is one of the most consistent performers in the charts this year. The best-selling British-built model for June, it remains in fourth in the annual sales rankings, but is only 42 sales behind the Qashqai at the moment.
The Mini has received positive reviews, with an Expert Rating of 77% on our Expert Rating Index. The electric model doesn’t do so well, with a score of just 67%.
5. Kia Sportage
Another consistent performer, the recently-facelifted Kia Sportage holds on to fifth after June – slipping from the giddy heights of second position two months ago. The Sportage finished eighth in the monthly sales charts, and was almost outsold by the MG HS.
The new Kia Sportage hasn’t received that many reviews yet, and currently holds an Expert Rating of 72% on our industry-leading Expert Rating Index. This could shift as more reviews are published in coming months.
6. Hyundai Tucson
Another SUV on a slight downwards sales trajectory, the Hyundai Tucson finished tenth in the monthly best-sellers list for the second month running. For now, the Tucson holds on to sixth in the annual sales list, managing to extend its lead over the Ford Kuga which had a poor month of registrations.
The new Tucson has received positive reviews from the motoring media, with a solid Expert Rating of 76% on our industry-leading Expert Rating Index.
7. Kia Niro
In the twilight of its production life, the soon-to-be-replaced Kia Niro sold in decent numbers yet again in June, suggesting that the Korean manufacturer is doing better than most in securing a supply of semiconductor chips. Overtaking the Kuga once again, the Niro occupies seventh in the annual best-seller rankings.
The Kia Niro has received fairly mixed reviews, with the hybrid version holding an Expert Rating of 64% on our Expert Rating Index. The electric model does better, with an outstanding score of 85%.
8. Ford Kuga
The Ford Kuga dropped out of the monthly top ten rankings in June, and has slid down the annual rankings by one place to eighth as a consequence. The smaller Puma SUV is proving to be the more popular Ford model as the year progresses.
Its Expert Rating of 74% places it firmly in the middle of a very competitive family SUV market.
9. Volkswagen Golf
The Volkswagen Golf’s second mid-table finish in as many months, the mid-sized hatchback settled in fifth in the monthly best-sellers list in June, after a fourth place finish the month before. Possibly a sign of things to come, the Golf retains ninth place in the annual best-sellers chart.
On sale since 2020, the Golf currently holds an Expert Rating of 76%, with good scores from most UK media sources.
10. Tesla Model Y
Knocking the Vauxhall Mokka out of the annual top ten best-sellers is the Tesla Model Y, which surged up the monthly registration rankings in June to finish in second place. This is the SUV’s first appearance in the 2022 overall rankings, after recording strong sales numbers during its UK launch around the turn of the year.
The new Model Y has received some very positive media reviews, with an Expert Rating of 82%.
The next update (July results) will be due in the first week of August 2022.
